15 cm. Commun. Distingué par la double barre alaire blanche et, au vol, par les rectrices ext. blanches.

Mâle: dessous rose vineux, manteau roux, croupion verdâtre, calotte et nuque bleu-gris. Femelle: dessus brun olive pâle, dessous plus pâle. Vol onduleux. Grégaire, avec d'autres espèces, sauf à la saison des nids; sexes souvent en vols séparés.
A distinguer du pinson du nord par le croupion verdâtre(non blanc).

Voix: cri: 'tvic'; au vol: 'yup... yup...'
cri de rut: variable 'huit' ou 'pchuî'
chant: motif bref, vigoureux, cascade d'une douzaine de notes avec fioriture finale .

Habitat: partout où il y a des arbres: bois, parcs etc.; niche d'habitude dans un arbre.

Chaffinch

Generally the commonest European finch, readily distinguished by combination of white shoulder-patch, white wing-bar and white in tail.

Cock unmistakable with slate-blue head and nape, green rump and pinkish brown underparts; mantle usually chestnut. Hen and juvenile yellowish brown above, much darker in island forms, greyish below, and best told from other brown finches by conspicuous white shoulder-patch.

Cheerful rattling song varies widely from region to region and ends in 'tick' recalling Great Spotted Woodpecker commonest call-note 'pink, pink'; also flight-note a soft 'tsup', casual 'tsit' and insistent warning 'wheet''; a confusing spring call is 'tswee'. Call of Canary forms, 'choo, choo', chwee, chwee' or 'chwoopie'.

Woods and forests areas with scattered trees, in winter in more open country, often with other finches and bramblings under beeches.

Vink

Kleine vinkachtige, 15 cm. Adult mannetje roodbruin ; zwarte staart met opvallende witte buitenste staartpennen. Kop en nek grijs, voorhoofd zwart. Donkerbruine vleugels met twee witte vleugelstrepen ; één duidelijk zichtbaar in rust en beide in de diep golvende vlucht.

Onderdelen roze overgaand in wit op de buik.
‘s Winters is veel van de mooie kleur gebroken door brede gele veerranden, het zwarte voorhoofd is dan nauwelijks meer zichtbaar. Relatief langen, grijze snavel. Vrouwtje en juveniel van boven bruin ; van onderen licht geelbruin met witte randen. Donkerbruine staart. Bruine vleugels met twee opvallende vleugelstrepen. ‘s Winters vaak in groepen.

Roep : karakteristiek ringelend ‘pink’, zang een ratelende, aflopende cascade eindigend in een tierelantijntje. Wijdverbreid ; loof, naald en gemengd bos
