| Cevennes - Lozère | Saint Germain de Calberte Saint André de Lancize Saint Martin de Lansuscle |
When we speak of the Cevennes, we often visualise them in the past but they are well and truly present ... If a traveller finds it hard going to cross a ridge or traverse one of the Gardon rivers, he should not despair but remember that this is a region requires one to make an effort... |

In the heart of the Cevennes, land of schist and chestnut trees shaped by man and by the centuries... Deep but homely valleys, homesteads at one with nature, Crops grown on terraces reaching up the mountainside, Ridgetops with their trails for sheep during the transhumance, springs and limpid streams; on the slopes, the proud and majestic Chestnut tree, the Cevenol "bread tree" and, here and there on the narrow terraces, a few surviving mulberry trees to remind us of the silk industry. Land of the Camisards but also a place of refuge and of peace so deeply sensed by Robert Louis Stevenson in his "Travels with a Donkey". A region of contrasts rich of history. |
