Welcome in the Lozère, the country of the 'Grands Causses' highlands and the Gorges du Tarn The Tarn river rises at the Mont Lozère. Eastwards of Florac, the streams of the Tarnon and the Mimente both join the Tarn. From there on, the river flows into the deeper valley in between the highlands of the 'Causses Méjean' and 'Sauveterre'. From the bridge of Quezac up to Rozier, the rivers flows through a superbe canyon called : the Gorges du Tarn : Grand Site National. On the Causses, the highlands : you'll find an immense plain, rather dry, but of great charm thank to its great tranquility. The main rural activity of these highlands is flock-keeping :
The Tarn was the only way transport for local merchandises until 1905, when the actual road from Ste Enimie to Rozier was opened. The first tourists who arrived in the Gorges du Tarn at the end of the 19th century descended the Tarn by barge from la Malène to 'les Baumes' (8 km). This track still is proposed to tourists nowadays. The steep hillside of the Gorges have transformed by man by creating terraces and planting vineyards and nuttreess abruptes des Gorges en terrasses. Over the last decades, since man has left the region, these cultures has been abandoned. The point in common between the Gorges and the Causses is its pureness : pure air, pure water and a pure horizon. Its discovery can take weeks, months and will never be finished. The tourist offices of the Gorges du Tarn and the Causses, supply numerous documentation but also edit brochures : Some tourist offices will propose you brochures on hiking tracks or interesting trips by car trough the Gorges du Tarn to the Causses. |
